Valentine's
Day is lauded as a "hallmark" or manufactured holiday.
People reel at
the thought of celebrating love on one specific day. Shouldn't we
celebrate it every day?
Why should we be told what to do and when to
celebrate?
What about Mother's Day? Father's Day? Are those not Hallmark
created days to celebrate your parents?
Why are those days held so dear
yet the day of love given the cold shoulder?
While
I agree that love should hold a place of honor the other 364 days, I
see no problem with setting aside one day a year to reflect on mankind's
most powerful emotion.
No one is saying you have to give and receive
flowers and jewelry. Those are props, garnishes.
Love
is all around us.
In the eyes of our children, a snuggle from a pet, a
thank you from a stranger.
It is in everything we do and everywhere we
go.
What is so bad about having one day a year for us to
collectively thank love for all that it does?
To be thankful for
surviving when it turns on us and leaves us broken and alone. For being
grateful that there are people, maybe even some we have yet to meet,
that love us.
To reflect on those we have loved, those we have lost.
I say thank you to Valentine's Day for reminding me to slow down and take at least one day to say, I Love You.
