While you are at it, buzz around a few other blogs and see what happens at their houses:
Come on in for a landing, any wall will do. Here we go!
__________
"Look mommy! I riding the back of the couch like a
horsey! I being careful cause I could get hurt. But I won't cause I am a big
girl." The kiddo was straddling the back of the sofa with a jump rope in
hand.
"Careful, kiddo. Even big people can get hurt," I
warned her. She gave it a moment's thought than asked me if I got hurt. When I
told her that I did she asked who rescued me. "Daddy rescues me,
usually," I explained.
"Is daddy your daddy?"
"No, peanut. He is my husband. He protects me and helps
me out when I need it."
She seemed content with this explanation. I went back into
my room to continue to fold some laundry. Within minutes she showed up in the
doorway, seemingly very sad. I asked her what was wrong.
"I am sad cause I don't have a husband!!! Who will
protect me?" Her giant blue eyes were welling up with tears.
"Oh, sweetheart! You have mommy and daddy to protect
you. We will always protect and rescue you. Someday, when you grow up, you will
meet someone. You will love them so much and want to live with them. Then, they
will protect you. You might even get married and have babies. Mommy and daddy
will always be there but when you are grown you will also have a husband or a
wife to protect you." I finished my explanation, figuring it sailed high
over her head but hopefully soothed her worries at the same time.
She thought for a minute then started to laugh. Hard. Then,
harder. "I will live with my wife. And then, we will buy a baby! You know,
go baby shopping! Mommy you so silly. Baby shopping. That is so funny."

*Ring Ring*
I look at the caller ID. The number is familiar but I can't
place it.
"Hello?"
"Hi!!" says my little sister who is currently
station in Louisiana.
"Hi!!! I didn't recognize your number!" Our
converstations nearly always start the same. I don't recognize her number. She
laughs at me, I realize how much I miss her but try not to let it show in my
voice. It is hard for her and her husband to be so far from home. I don't want
to add my sadness to hers.
We continue to chat for a few more minutes. Quick tid bits
of our days since our last phone call, then:
"Are you sitting down?" She asks.
"Yes...."
"I am pregnant!!!!"
The words still echo in my head. I fight back tears. I get
far too choked up when I cry and wouldn't be able to talk to her if I let it
happen. I let out a half muffled squeal, I didn't want to deafen her.
"I am trying not to cry.....hang on...." It didn't
work. The tears flowed for the rest of our conversation.
There is something so amazing about good news from someone
you love. Someone you look up to.
Someone you adore.

Any parent knows how things change when you have a baby.
They change even more when that baby becomes a toddler. You then have a
walking, talking, little person shadowing your every move. We tried to get two
steps ahead of our kiddo by attempting to instill a sense of personal space and
privacy early on. It seemed to be working. One day, while using the bathroom,
my then 2 year old busts in.
"Kiddo, mommy needs privacy," I said to her as she
sat on the stool in front of me.
"Oh!" She jumped up and headed for the door. I
felt so proud that she was really getting this. I was going to be able to pee
alone. Then, she toddled over to the door, gently shut it, walked back to her
stool and said,
"Mommy! Now we have privacy!"
__________
"Don't touch the doggies butt."
"That is poop, we don't play with poop."
"Floor food is not edible food."
"Humans can not fly. Yes, you are human."
"Please put your pants back on before we leave the
house."
"Those are grave stones, not rocks to take home."
"No, I do not want to see you pee."
Phrases that 4 years ago, I would have never said but are
now commonplace.

One of the reasons I'm sorry I wasn't blogging when my kids were little is because I don't have a record of all of those things I never thought I'd say. I'd sure love to look back on them all now.
ReplyDeleteCongratulations, Aunt-to-be!
She really is my muse. I am only even a little funny because of her.
DeleteThank you, I am SO excited!!
So glad you joined us!
ReplyDeleteOooh, you have a deep thinker. Gonna have to stay on your toes! She sounds adorable.
And...congrats on being an Auntie :)
Thank you for reading!!
DeleteShe's only three and already far smarter than me. I am in for it.
Funny how that happens, things you thought you would never say... Well is pretty much all you say!
ReplyDeleteWelcome to the Fly, it's nice to "meet you"
I swear 90% of what comes out of my mouth sounds insane when taken out of context. Fine, truth be told, it probably sounds insane IN context, too.
DeleteIt is so nice to "meet" you as well!!
I loved your post. Your little one is so sweet. I especial love the "Who will protect me?" story. Congrats on becoming an aunt! Having family far away is so hard. I get it. Welcome to the FLY!!
ReplyDeleteThanks for reading!! I had a blast!
DeleteHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!! I loved how she gave you privacy. Too precious.
ReplyDeleteMy 4 year old finds it amazing that I was once a kid and that I have a mommy and daddy. She also thinks that her brother is her boyfriend.
Congrats on being an Aunt!
Ironically she now yells for privacy while using the bathroom with the door wide open. Kids are hilarious. I love that your kiddo thinks her brother is her boyfriend. That is beyond adorable!
DeleteThank you for reading!!!!
